Teaming
As with all new technologies, industry, academia, government, and the public have key roles. Strong STEM programs ensure there is an engineering corps, business models are necessary to ensure industry can be profitable while providing affordable products to the public, regulation is required to establish safety norms, and social acclimation to new technology is critical to create the trust among the populous that is the foundation of a consumer demand for the new product and the associated infrastructure and support.
The Aurora Lightning Strike is a hybrid electric experimental ORB. Based in Virginia, Aurora has completed flight test of a subscale prototype and is now developing a full-sized unmanned demonstrator. After a vertical takeoff, the wing tilts to accelerate to over 300 mph.

Pop Up is a concept jointly developed by Airbus and Italdesign. It is a modular ORB that allows the passenger payload unit to detach from the flying unit creating a system for both air and ground mobility. Airbus hopes to leverage their electric aircraft demonstrators for this project.

Aerospace History
A Long Line of Litigation
Many fondly look upon the early ages of flying and imagine a dream world where aviation pioneers thought and flew freely, rapidly designing never-before-seen aircraft and quickly bringing them to market. Unfortunately, a deeper study of history shows a very different reality of untimely deaths and painful legal battles. FlyORBs.org is focused making the transition into the new era of aviation faster, better, cheaper, safer and much more fun!
After phenomenal engineering feats, the Wright Brothers did not fly or design for several years. Instead of continuing to create value for the world with their engineering skills, they became consumed with protecting their intellectual property (read more). The conflict eventually erupted in litigation distracting these innovators from their core competency. Some speculate that by 1911, European aircraft had become more capable than the Wright aircraft as a result of the Brothers being preoccupied with patent wars. In fact, Wilbur, who led the legal battle, died from typhoid fever in 1912. His brother and sister attributed his early death, in part, to the misery of litigation.
Changing Aerospace History
With the revolution in technology and the vast opportunities on the horizon today, it is imperative that there is proper teaming so all stakeholders can focus on their strengths. While serendipity occasionally aligns industry, government, and academia for fruitful collaboration, FlyORBs.org believes that this alignment is much more effective when thoughtfully designed and carefully implemented through willful participation among diverse stakeholders. With this collaboration we believe it is possible minimize repeating the mistakes of history--avoiding the counterproductive clashes over a share of what competitors perceived as a small market. We believe the mobility market will someday take us to the stars--it is only limited by human imagination. The market will grow fastest through collaboration if we share the air, not just slicing, but multiplying the pie in the sky.
